Walk an extra mile by wearing a pedometer
Via MSNBC Fitness
According to various studies done in United States and Canada and half a dozen from Japan, Europe and Australia there is a little $20 gadget that can help you stay in shape, help you walk an extra mile each day, and even aid you in losing weight.
The catch? You have to log your steps. That seems pretty easy.
Pedometers, also called step counters, clip to a belt or waistband and count the steps the wearer takes during the day. They range in price from $5 to all the way up to $60, with simple yet reliable models costing around $20.
The analysis found that increasing physical activity depended on setting a goal and keeping a diary of the number of steps walked each day. “Every night, you write down how many steps you walked that day” says Dr. Dena Bravata of Stanford University. “By flipping back through your diary, you’re able to see various patterns.”
According to shapeup.org, there are now some studies suggesting that walking 10,000 steps a day is the right ball park to be in. 10, 000 steps is approximately 5 miles or so depending on the legth of your stride.
So… it looks like I will be dusting off my old yellow pedometer and tracking my steps again. I will start logging my steps just using a paper pad & pen for now. Nice & simple.
Here are other sites & articles that will give you various ideas on how you can increase your steps & activity each day.
Now, get to walkin’!

Good for you, Vilma! I think you’ll be surprised how easy it is to get 10,000 steps a day, especially since you seem to be on the go a LOT! I actually hit 15,000 one day last week, so I may make that my new goal for every day.

WOW! 15,000! That’s A LOT!!! I started counting my steps today and I just got in about 7000 without any exercise (just walking around at the mall & stuff). I will defenitely try to shoot for 15,000 but will keep my goal at 10000 for now.

I stumbled upon your blog through John is Fit.
I wear a pedometer everyday as well. It really has kept me active. I strive for at least 10,000 and last month I had a daily average of over 12,000 steps. It really is easy.
Nice blog:)

Hey TB. Thanks for visiting my blog. Your step count is amazing! It looks like I will have to be doing better with my steps because when I was “active” I was only getting in about 9,000 or less.
