What you don’t know about green tea

April 10, 2008 By: Vilma Perez Category: Nutrition, Precision Nutrition 3 Comments →

I just received an email from John Berardi and it has to do with Green Tea, which is by far one of my FAVORITE drinks - cold or hot!  I thought I would share it with my readers because it has some very useful and insightful tips that i’m sure you all can use!

Enjoy!!!

=================

From the desk of Dr. Berardi:

Nowadays, pretty much everyone has accepted that tea (especially the green kind) offers some tremendous health benefits including:

  • Anti-cancer properties
  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Metabolism boosting properties
  • And more…

However, not everyone knows the other important stuff - such as:

  1. Green vs. Black vs. White
What’s the difference between black, white, green, and herbal.  And how these differences can impact your body.
  2. EGCG and Antioxidants
How tea does its magic in your body, including how this EGCG stuff you hear so much about really works.
  3. Milk and Tea
How adding milk to tea might actually ruin its health benefits!
  4. Loose vs. bags
How to choose between loose leaf tea and tea bags. Green tea is not green tea.
  5. Tea vs. Supplements
Which is better and what to be careful with.
  6. Tea and Taste
How to use tea as a recipe ingredient vs. just drinking it hot.

In the end, unless you’re already a tea connoisseur, I guarantee you’ll learn something new in this week’s update.

So…. go check it out!!!!

PN Starting Stats & Measurements

July 10, 2007 By: Vilma Perez Category: Personal Challenges, Precision Nutrition, Stats & Measurements No Comments →

So my application is about done. I did everything except the blood tests & the T-Max test that I will do sometime this week.

Here are my stats:

General Statistics:
Female
Height: 5′7.3″ (67.3 inches)
Weight: 188.5 lbs (July 2, 2007)
Body Fat %: 34.42% (7 site caliper test)
Body type: Endomorph/slight Mesomorph
Activity Level: Active/Very Active (will be working out 5-6 days a week for about 1-2 hours)
Goal: Fat Loss, Muscle preservation (possibly gain)

Starting Skin Fold Measurements (mm):
Abs: 30
Triceps: 30
Chest: 18
Mid-ax: 30
Subscapular: 30
Suprailliac: 34
Thigh: 42
Sum of 7 Skinfolds: 214 mm

Starting Girth (Circumference ) Measurements (inches):
Neck:14
Shoulder: 44
Biceps: 12
Calf: 14.75

Deadlift: 14 reps @ 95 lbs

V-Max & T-Max
Speed: 6 mph
Elevation: 4% grade
T-Max:

And finally…

Before Pictures:

These have been posted on my thread at the Precision Nutrition Forums

A side note on my BF%

You know… a 5% BF difference can really throw your readings off! I was just looking through my earlier posts and I had this posted:

TOTAL inches lost since 2/28/2007: 47.75 inches!!!

** Using Online Circumference BF% Calculator:

GRAND TOTAL Fat Lost: 35.11 pounds
GRAND TOTAL Lean Mass Gained: 14.11 pounds
GRAND TOTAL Weight Lost: 21 pounds

The online BF% Calculator had me between 29% BF.

When I did my measurements using the 7-site caliper method, it came out to 34.42%!!! Wow. BIG difference.

I know that the 7-site caliper method is more accurate so I will stick with this method from now on. The BIA test that I do at the gym is about .5% below this.

Anyhow… here are my updated progress stats:

TOTAL inches lost since 2/28/2007: 47.75 inches!!!

** Using 7-site caliper method:

GRAND TOTAL Fat Lost: 27.34 pounds
GRAND TOTAL Lean Mass Gained: 3.84 pounds
GRAND TOTAL Weight Lost: 23.5 pounds

========

Moral of this story… caliper test’s are more accurate than online BF% calculators!!!

Still very good progress.

June 27, 2007 By: Vilma Perez Category: Precision Nutrition 4 Comments →

Just had to share… Who wants to join me???

:D

==========

The PN Body Transformation Contest
Are You Up For The Challenge?

John Berardi, PhD, CSCS

The Precision Nutrition Experiment
Here at Precision Nutrition, we’re constantly motivated and inspired by the members of our ever-growing community.

When we started this little web experiment over 18 months ago, we weren’t sure what to expect. In fact, we had A LOT of questions…

  • Would the PN Forums be well-received… or would our countless hours of posting be wasted on apathetic members?
  • Would our PN Members take our lead and help to shape this place into a helpful, supportive community…or would the PN Forums fill up with antagonistic web browsers?
  • Would the PN Forums actually serve to help people reach their goals…or would they serve as a distraction?

Well, the verdict is in.

At over 17,000 members strong, the PN community is growing rapidly.

Further, the PN Community has become a place of never-ending social support and positive energy, a place where both veterans and beginners can feel welcome.

Finally, the PN Forums provide a testament to the fact that folks just like you can achieve amazing body transformations with the help of a few ingredients:

  • The right information
  • The right support network
  • A good dose of determination

So, in all, the PN Forum experiment has been quite a success. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Browse around the PN Forums. Talk to some of the PN Members. Check out the Precision Nutrition Member Logs. Better yet, check out the successful transformations highlighted below.

Taking a week off & EXITED!!!!!

June 20, 2007 By: Vilma Perez Category: Daily Journal, Precision Nutrition 2 Comments →

I just ordered my Precision Nutrition Kit & i’m counting down the days until I have it in my hands!!! Thanks Swigg & Maggie for turning me on to this. These past couple of days i’ve been going GAGA over all the information that Dr. Berardi has on his message boards!!!! Awesome stuff, but some stuff was not viewable to free members… so I just about had it this morning… and went ahead and ordered the kit. All the reviews that i’ve read so far are pretty good.

As far as the week off goes… Yes, I have taken this week off from weights & extra HIIT cardio. My body needed the rest & it’s gone pretty good so far. I’m only doing the CFP classes MWF and a walk/run here and there with hubby. I’m laying of the weights this week & doing body weight exercises instead (push-ups, dips, burpees, etc…). My nutrition has been pretty good, but not as perfect as I would want it to be. I’m measuring every day & I haven’t gained inches so that’s a BIG plus! I’m also going to take the time to re-evaluate my goals and see where there needs to be some changes. In three months i’ve manage to lose 22 lbs & about 45 inches… so that’s really really good & i’m very proud of myself for that. The next three months I want to take this to another level & drop alot of body fat & get back into my size 10/8 jeans.

Will update more on PN when I receive it & have gone over it throughly.

To you health,

~ Vilma
